D365FO on-premise implementaion

Hi All,

I have several questions regarding D365FO implementation on-premise.

From https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/unified-operations/dev-itpro/deployment/plan-onprem-deployment there is a list of machines specified that represent a minimum for a Production environment:

  • 3 machines running Environment Orchestrator
  • 3 machines running Application Object Servers (AOS)
  • 1 machine running Management Reporter (MR)
  • 1 machine running SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS)
  • 2 or more machines running SQL Server
  • 2 or more machines running Active Directory

1) Is it "true" minimum? Or it's just recommended MS configuration?

2) Can this number be decreased (for ex. 2 AOS servers in place of 3, 1 SQL server in place of 2)?

3) Can some of services be combined on 1 server (as it could be done in AX 2012)? For example: SQL+SSRS+MR

4) Why we need 3 separate machines for "Environment Orchestrator"?

5) Why we need 2 "Active Directory" servers? What it gives?
